Teeth whitening products are one of the most popular beauty items. However, as many of us want pearly whites, finding the best at-home kit can be a hassle.

In most drugstores, convenience stores and general merchandisers, customers can buy toothpaste, gel, whitening strips, pens and more. There are a variety of items that claim to whiten teeth from beneath the surface. Not only are there a variety of smile-focused products, but many people still rely on natural remedies to lighten their teeth, including common household items such as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

In a study done by the American Association of Orthodontists, doctors found that 90 percent of their patients requested brightening products. As we get older, the brightness of our teeth slowly fades away. Although you want your teeth as white as possible, it’s important to note there are limitations of at-home teeth whitening products. Generally, you can use drugstore teeth whiteners for 14 consecutive days, but it will depend on your individual sensitivities. Not only does age affect a smile, but according to the American Dental Association, things such as tobacco consumption, drinking red wine and coffee can leave a stain, and ultimately, darken the teeth. Food and drinks stain the teeth when color pigments (chromogens) attach to the enamel.

Even though many daily routines can leave behind a stain, there are a variety of ways to prevent the visible change in appearance. According to Medical News Today, brushing your teeth with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide are safe ways to brighten up the appearance.

Another suggestion made by the outlet is to practice good oral hygiene through regular flossing, brushing and use of fluoride toothpaste.

The best way to find a whitening product while in a store or online is by looking for a stamp of approval from the American Dental Association. According to Lasry Dental Clinic, products reviewed by ADA are put through an intensive inspection before getting their stamp of approval. Many of the products cleared are not only affordable but can be found in most drugstores. ADA-approved whitening products include Crest whitening strips, hydrogen peroxide and Tom's toothpaste.

The dental clinic does warn readers of the following: "Although you want your teeth as white as possible, it’s important to note there are limitations of at-home teeth whitening products. Generally, you can use drugstore teeth whiteners for 14 consecutive days, but it will depend on your individual sensitivities."
