Ali Wong Admits She's Stayed Friends and Never 'Cut the Cord' From Anyone She's Ever Dated: 'That Never Worked for Me'
Ali Wong isn't one to listen to others regarding how she lives her life.
When it comes to parenting her two daughters, making choices in her booming career and especially in her love life, Wong, 42, marches to the beat of her own drum.
In a candid interview, the funny lady revealed she has remained friends with everyone she's ever been romantically involved with. "I understand that some people really need to cut the cord, but that never worked for me," she admitted.
Wong is currently dating fellow comedian Bill Hader following her 2022 divorce from ex-husband Justin Hakuta, with whom she shares kiddos Mari, 8, and Nikki, 6. "Divorces are like snowflakes. There's truly no two alike," she said about her split from her former spouse, whom she calls her "best friend."
The Netflix star has her own rules when it comes to motherhood, as she's made sure her daughters are always on the road with her. "I met Lauryn Hill a couple of years ago, and talked to her about touring with children, and she talked to me about how she brought her mother everywhere with her, too," Wong noted. "I can put the kids down, rush out, do a set or two, and then be there in the morning."
While some Hollywood A-listers could see becoming a parent as a roadblock to their work, Wong has felt quite the opposite. "For me, motherhood was definitely not an end," the Beef actress revealed. "It was this expansive beginning to so many new chapters. I have them to be grateful for that, too."
For Wong's mom, witnessing her daughter's untraditional habits has been an adjustment after raising her own kids in an entirely different way. “For someone like my mother, I think it can be challenging, because she’s 84, you know? In her time, you weren’t really supposed to live a life for yourself. It was all about sacrificing and servicing everyone else before you," she admitted. “I’ve never cared as much about what other people think, but I do care a lot about what my family thinks."
"It’s mostly because of her and the father of my children that I’ve been able to do everything I do, but it’s also because of her that I sometimes struggle with being ‘non-traditional,'" she gushed over the support systems in her life. "I was so fortunate that by the time I was going on tour, like, my first big tour, I had the means to pay for my kids to come with me."
