Anne Hathaway Announces 'Princess Diaries 3' Is Officially in the Works: 'Miracles Happen'
Attention, millennials — dreams are coming true!
On Saturday, October 5, Anne Hathaway took to Instagram to announce that she will return as the iconic character of Mia Thermopolis in the upcoming third installment of the 2001 smash The Princess Diaries.
"Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️🔥," the A-lister captioned the video of herself counting down to three with her fingers along with the announcement of the highly anticipated project to the tune of the film's signature song by Myra.
"I’m seated. quite frankly I’ve never been more sat!!!" one excited fan penned in the comments section.
"This is our moment!! No one born in the 2000s should be in the theater!!" another jokingly added.
"This is everything I would have wanted," a third chimed in.
The project is set to be helmed by Crazy Rich Asians director Adele Lim with Hathaway starring, as well as producing, the flick. "As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim gushed in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
In the years since the sequel in 2004, the Devil Wears Prada star has made it clear she would love nothing more than to return to the Disney franchise in which she starred alongside Julie Andrews.
"There is a script for the third movie,” Hathaway teased during a 2019 appearance on Watch What Happens Live. "There is a script. I want to do it, Julie wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”
As for whether or not the Sound of Music actress, 89, will also be reprising her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, nothing has been confirmed, as she's always been undecided about returning to Genovia.
"It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone," Andrews said in an interview earlier this year.
"I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, till it’s dead. I’d be very happy if we did do another one," she added.
The Hollywood Reporter first announced the third The Princess Diaries movie and obtained the statement from Lim.
Today.com conducted the 2024 interview with Andrews about returning for a third movie.
