A Creative Brewery Has Combined Hard Seltzer With Sour Warheads Candy!
Though there are already a multitude of spiked seltzers on shelves, Artisanal Brew Works has unveiled a collab that stands out from the rest, as it tastes just like the super-sour candy Warheads!
The new drink isn't just inspired by the confection — the small brewery's cofounders Kurt Borchardt and Colin Quinn actually told Food & Wine that they reached out to the company so they could nail down the exact formula.
"We figured that we'd jump out in front of it and just ask them if they were interested in working with us," explained Quinn. "As it turns out, they were very receptive, and really, really cool."
At first, they concocted a few flavors in the form of sour beer, and "the seltzers seemed like such a natural progression of that," Quinn shared. "It seemed like something that would work really well that would make people happy."
"We run a taproom, too and we've had a lot of people come in with our regular customers who are gluten-free," he noted. "So to offer something that's not beer, that's also fun for them, was a consideration."
At the moment, the sips are offered in five flavors: green apple, watermelon. blue raspberry, black cherry and lemon.
"They’re sweet, they're lightly tart, and they’re unlike any hard seltzer you’ve had before!" promises the brand.
"Warheads® hard candies have three distinct sensory phases — the extreme sour phase, the flavor phase, and the sweet phase. In creating hard seltzers, we sought to be true to the candy, but make hard seltzers that were still drinkable by the pint, which required a delicate balance between drinkability, sourness, flavor, and sweetness," the description reads. "Which is why we created our Warheads® Hard Seltzers to match the point when the Warheads® candy transitions from sour to flavor."
Though the drinks — which are available in 4-packs for $13 — were originally only available for pickup at the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., headquarters, they've since expanded shipments to Massachusetts, Southern California, Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey "and down state."
The brewery is now gearing up to release new "SmashUp" flavors of their Warheads Ale, which comes in Cherry Lime, Orange Pineapple and Lemon Berry varieties.
