Cate Blanchett's Favorite Roles — From 'Blue Jasmine' to 'Tár' and More!
Actress Cate Blanchett said she didn’t plan on a career in showbiz, but kind of “stumbled” into it, after she once revealed, “I didn’t know where I was going at all.”
Born in Melbourne, Australia, she admitted, “There’s no maniacal master plan. It’s just unfolding in front of me.”
Here are Blanchett's ten favorite roles and what the 54-year-old actress says they mean to her.
Elizabeth (1998)
After many years appearing on the stage, Blanchett said, “I didn’t think I’d ever make a film at all. I was shocked. I called my agent after making Elizabeth and said, ‘I think I’ve ended my career before it’s even begun.’”
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
"Galadriel is a special character to me, mythic and fascinating. I was very young when I first played Galadriel. I hope to have evolved, to be a better actress, person and mother," she said.
She also appeared in the film’s two sequels, along with the Hobbit trilogy," she said of starring in the franchise.
The Aviator (2004)
On playing Katharine Hepburn, “I find her fearlessness very inspiring. You have to risk failure. Otherwise, you don’t keep developing. She had enormous failures, but she kept going.”
I’m Not There (2007)
In her gender-bender role as the singer, “I think I run 100 miles an hour away from projects. The idea of playing Bob Dylan was just so utterly ludicrous that of course I had to say yes.”
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
As a child, Blanchett was “head over heels in love with Harrison Ford. But I did not tell him that. It might have made him feel a bit old!”
Blue Jasmine (2013)
Despite the “benign neglect” she felt from director Woody Allen, she won her second Oscar, to which she said, “Working with Woody is like an emotional strip club without the cash.”
Carol (2015)
"There are a couple of films I’ve been privileged to be part of that have affected people, Carol being one of them, and I’m always very moved by the responses," she noted of the romantic drama.
The Present (2017)
The story of forlorn love adapted by husband Andrew Upton was her Broadway debut: “They can never be together, but they’re yearning to be together. That often happens to people.”
Ocean’s 8 (2018)
"Making Ocean’s 8 was too much fun! It’s funny because you don’t worry about what you’re missing until you experience it," she gushed over working with the likes of Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway and more A-listers.
Tár (2023)
"There was something really immersive about this one, beyond anything I thought possible outside the theater. I’ve never encountered a character like this. She inhabited my dreams," she said.
