‘Honor in Armor’: A Groundbreaking Look at the Swiss Guard’s Hidden World
For over five centuries, the Vatican Swiss Guard has stood as a symbol of faith, loyalty, and sacrifice, charged with protecting the Pope and the Vatican. Known worldwide for their colorful Renaissance-style uniforms, their real story — one of courage, duty, and deep tradition — has remained largely untold. Now, Honor in Armor: Inside the Vatican Swiss Guard, a new documentary that had its U.S. premiere recently at The Sheen Center in New York City, brings audiences behind the Vatican walls for an unprecedented look into their lives.
The 52-minute film, directed by Golden Globe winner Jesús Garcés Lambert and written by longtime Vatican journalist Seán-Patrick Lovett, was created in collaboration with the Dr. Ramón Tallaj Foundation, Rome Reports, Pontifical Mission Societies, and WaterStone Group. More than a history lesson, Honor in Armor tells a deeply human story — one of faith, discipline, and quiet sacrifice.

A Mission to Illuminate a Hidden World
For Dr. Ramón Tallaj, founder of the Dr. Ramón Tallaj Foundation, the documentary continues his commitment to telling stories of faith and service. “Most people — Catholic or not — don’t know what goes on behind the Vatican walls,” Dr. Tallaj said. “This film shows who these men are, where they come from, and why they choose this life.”
The idea for the documentary came from a longstanding partnership with Rome Reports. “We’ve produced other films on the Vatican and Pope Francis,” added Mario J. Paredes, CEO of SOMOS Community Care and a close collaborator on the film. “But when we started hearing about the Swiss Guards’ daily lives — their families, their sacrifices — we knew this story had to be shared.”
From Mercenaries to Guardians of Faith
Founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II, the Swiss Guard began as mercenaries hired to protect the Pope during turbulent times in Europe. “They were bodyguards from far-off lands, brought in to defend when no one else would,” Dr. Tallaj explained. Today, though no longer mercenaries, they serve as loyal guardians of the Pope — blending centuries-old tradition with modern faith and discipline.
The documentary also reveals surprising personal details — like the fact that some Guards live inside the Vatican with their families. “I had no idea their families lived there. That was incredible to learn,” Dr. Tallaj said.

A Story of Faith, Duty, and Modern Challenges
Honor in Armor also explores what inspires young men to join this elite force today, often driven by a deep sense of faith and purpose. “Some told us they dreamed of becoming Swiss Guards since childhood,” Dr. Tallaj shared. The film also uncovers dramatic moments from history, including the Swiss Guard’s role in protecting Pope Pius XII during World War II. “I was shocked to learn that Hitler had a plan to kidnap the Pope — and the Swiss Guard stood in his way,” he said.
A Foundation Rooted in Service
For Dr. Tallaj, the film also reflects the broader mission of his foundation, which provides scholarships for underprivileged students pursuing careers in healthcare. “A lot of these kids come from families where their mothers work as maids or cooks — brilliant students who just need a chance,” he said. “So far, we’ve helped 65 become doctors — and 90 percent are children of single mothers.”
In many ways, the Foundation’s mission mirrors the values of the Swiss Guard — service, sacrifice, and dedication to a higher calling.
A Celebration of Tradition and Strength
Honor in Armor marks another significant step for Dr. Tallaj and Mario Paredes in bringing powerful stories of faith to life. Both previously produced Benedict XVI: In Honor of the Truth, an Emmy-winning documentary about Pope Benedict XVI. But for them, this story of the Swiss Guard is something special.
“This film shows young men who’ve found purpose in service — it’s a message that speaks across generations and faiths,” Dr. Tallaj said.
As the Church faces new challenges in a modern world, Honor in Armor is a reminder that tradition, courage, and faith still endure — embodied by the steadfast Swiss Guard, standing watch as they have for over 500 years.
