Craving Krispy Kreme? How to Make the Beloved Fast-Food Donuts at Home
There is a problem with Krispy Kreme doughnuts — they are not available 24/7 in your kitchen!
Australian chef Rob Nixon promises he has that problem licked with a recipe for creating your own version of the glazed treat in just 20 minutes using ingredients you already have in your kitchen.
The 1.24 million folks who subscribe to Nixon’s YouTube channel, Nicko’s Kitchen, have already made them — sweet and crispy on the outside, light and moist on the inside! All you need is milk, flour, sugar, eggs, butter and pantry spices for the dough, and simple sugar syrup for the icing.
Here's everything you need to make the delicious treats:
1. Ingredients for the Donuts
2 cups milk 1 tsp. salt ½ cup softened butter ½ tsp. nutmeg 4 eggs, beaten ¾ cup sugar 2 tsp. dried yeast 5 cups self-raising flour Canola oil for frying
Ingredients for the Icing
3 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 tsp. vanilla ½ cup water
Tools
Large round cookie cutter Rolling pin Deep fat fryer or deep skillet pan
Make the Dough
Heat milk, salt and softened butter together in the microwave for one minute until warm. Add nutmeg, eggs and ½ cup sugar to the mixture and whisk.
Pour into a large mixing bowl and add yeast and the remainder of the sugar; whisk. Slowly add the flour while mixing until dough is thick and sticky. Allow the dough to rest for one hour.
Knead and Shape
Dust a wooden board with flour and knead the dough for no longer than three minutes. Roll it out and make circles with the cookie cutter, adding small center holes.
Fry
Fry in canola oil at roughly 340 degrees for two minutes on each side, until golden brown and puffy. Drain excess grease on a paper towel.
Make the Glaze
Mix confectioners’ sugar, vanilla and water in a large bowl until smooth. Ice both sides of the doughnuts and leave them to set for ten minutes. Enjoy!
