Miley Cyrus Admits It's 'Probably Really Hard' for Artists to Start Careers in the Age of Social Media: 'That Wasn’t Always a Part of My Life'
Miley Cyrus is happy fame found her at the perfect time.
The Hannah Montana alum, 32, became a household name in the late 2000s when she burst onto the scene in the beloved Disney Channel series. Now, in 2024, Cyrus could not be more grateful she was thrust into the public eye and made her mistakes when social media wasn't as prominent.
When asked about how pop sensation Chappell Roan — who pleaded with the public to respect her boundaries but faced backlash — the "Flowers" singer said, "I wish people would not give her a hard time."
"It’s probably really hard coming into this business with phones and Instagram. That wasn’t always a part of my life, and I’m not a part of it now. I don’t even have my Instagram password," Cyrus explained.
When navigating life on a global stage, the musician has always looked up to her godmother, Dolly Parton, for guidance. "She lets everyone in and no one in at the same time,” Cyrus explained of the icon, 78. “Everyone feels like they know her, but they’re also okay with the fact that they don’t see her without makeup, without the full drag.”
These days, when the former child star isn't promoting any new work, she's living a quiet life with her boyfriend, Maxx Morando, 26. "He looks at life really differently than I do,” she admitted. “He grew up with a laptop. I had a desktop computer that I shared with my brothers and sisters. … Honestly, he’s raised our dog off Reddit. I’m like, 'Are you sure we’re supposed to be doing this?' And he’s like, 'On Reddit, it says blah, blah, blah.'”
Recently, Cyrus and the drummer have been collaborating on new music together that will hopefully be out in 2025. "I worked with my dad forever. That’s how me and my ex-husband met each other. I’ve always worked with the people that I love. And Maxx just inspires me so much," The Last Song star pointed out.
After being in the industry for more than a decade, Cyrus is still hoping to be as innovative as possible with her art. "I would like to be a human psychedelic for people,” she added. “I don’t want anyone trying to be like me or imitate me or even be inspired by me. I want to impact frequencies in your body that make you vibrate at a different level.”
