Warm weather is finally here, but it comes with a few hair concerns, especially when you're dealing with wavy, curly, kinky or coily strands. As exciting as it is to have increased time spent in the sun, the season can be hard on both the hair and scalp. According to StyleCraze, the warmer weather can lead to dandruff, split ends, frizziness, sunburns, and ultimately, damage. As scary as this can sound, there are ways to prevent the sun and the environmental elements from causing irreversible damage. Morning Honey spoke with IGK co-founder Franck Izquierdo and R+Co co-founder Howard McLaren to learn more about how to care for curls during the warmer months.
When caring for curls at home, both professionals recommended hydration-focused routines. McLaren recommends using the Cassette shampoo and conditioner and styling with the Ringtone styling gel. Not only are all the products formulated for curly, kink and coily textures, but they have recognizable ingredients such as agave nectar, aloe vera, castor oil and chia seeds.
Izquierdo's recommendation is to apply products on wet hair and swap out the drying towel for fresh air. "For better curls, the tip is to apply products on very wet hair. Don’t towel dry too much. Mix IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm with the Beach Club Bouncy Blowout Cream and apply to wet hair. Then, spray Good Behavior 4-in-1 Prep Spray in the front to avoid frizz," he says.
"Finish with Antisocial Overnight Bond Building Dry Hair Mask and Best Life 100% Plant-Powered Nourishing Hair Oil for shine and hydration. Let air dry," he continues.
Along with preventing the impact of UV rays, there's another form of damage familiar to the curl community: heat. Flat irons, blow dryers, curling irons and hot combs are used to manipulate textured strands to appear straight. As popular as heat manipulation is, using it frequently can and will destroy the natural hair pattern. R+Co is an easy way to protect strands because all of their products contain heat protectants. However, even though many of us still want to test out different styles throughout the year, Izquierdo admits that this time of year is the season to embrace your textured strands, take a break from heat tools and just let them air dry.
