Nicki Minaj Reveals Why She's 'Become Less Confident' Over The Years
While James Corden's Carpool Karaoke segment is usually filled with laughs, hijinks, and of course, music, his latest guest Nicki Minaj got personal during their ride around town.
Despite her bold outfits and no-holds-barred attitude, the 39-year-old rapper confessed that she no longer feels as "confident" as she was during the earlier years of her career, which has caused her to develop anxiety.
"I think when I was younger probably my more natural state was to be more confident. I think when you are a woman and you're in the public eye all the time, if you're not careful you can become less confident because you're being constantly scrutinized," explained the mom-of-one. "I just don't think it's natural. It's not natural for a human being to just always feel like everyone's critiquing them."
"When I first came into the industry, I had this amazing sense of freedom because nobody gave a s**t about what I was doing. Like, I could get away with doing anything. And then it goes from that to the complete, complete opposite," continued Minaj. "Where it's like, if I blink my eye wrong, they'll have a story made up about why I blinked my eye that way."
To combat that stress, she'll take a break from social media. "Whenever ... I take that s**t off my phone, I have this enormous sense of peace," insisted the star. "And then you realize what really matters. The things that you think about, or would worry about, they’re like, who cares, you know?"
One of the things the "Super Bass" songstress cherishes the most in life is being a mom to her and husband Kenneth Petty's 1-year-old son, who she raps and sings to "all the time. I just make up melodies all day."
"I don’t care what could be going on, what text just came through my phone or what I just saw on the internet, when I look at my son, I’m just magically in love," gushed the Grammy nominee. "He just makes me laugh, makes me smile, makes me happy, like, he’s just so cute and cuddly."
