The Olivia Newton-John Only I Knew: Husband John Easterling Remembers the Late Actress in Touching Tribute
Olivia Newton-John was married to second husband John Easterling for less than 15 years — but they knew each other for many lifetimes in the past.
That’s what widower Easterling revealed a year-and-a-half after the legendary Grease star and singer died in 2022. "We had a deep relationship that went back in time, like centuries,” he explained.
Singing icon Newton-John was unlucky in love before meeting Easterling. She had divorced first hubby, actor Matt Lattanzi, the father of her 38-year-old daughter, Chloe, after 12 years of marriage. Another long-term relationship ended in 2005 when cameraman Patrick McDermott was lost at sea.
Mutual friends set up Newton-John and Easterling on a blind date over lunch in 1995. "I was a little suspect of meeting a Hollywood diva,” admitted Easterling, an Amazonian plant medicine specialist. "But she had such a great sense of humor and was a really warm, personable human being. She was not what I was expecting."
While they didn’t click then, Newton-John was interested in his plant medicine work since she’d been first diagnosed with cancer in 1992. They became platonic pals who saw each other at charity events.
"Then she invited me to a concert in Miami,” recalled Easterling, unfamiliar with Newton-John's music until then. “I heard these Peruvian flutes playing. She walked out onstage and sang ‘Pearls on a Chain,’ and people around me were so moved they started crying."
"That’s when I recognized who she is — she’s a healer! Her song and voice are mediums of her healing gift." He invited Newton-John to Peru, where he’s worked with indigenous healers to understand the potential of the rainforest. When she got sick in one village, Easterling stayed by her side.
"I couldn’t abandon her in the jungle,” said Easterling, 72. “That was the day we started having deep conversations that went back hundreds of years in our relationship. It was nothing that either one of us expected, but we were bonded from that day on.”
Sadly, Newton-John would lose her battle with breast cancer at age 73. Easterling misses her bright spirit and belief in the power of positive thinking. "She believed that all things are possible when you put your mind and energy toward it,” Easterling confided. “I miss her voice, her touch and her sense of humor. I miss her puttering around the house and spontaneously breaking into song."
