How to Prepare for Cold and Flu Season: 5 Simple Steps to Stay Healthy
1. Get Vaccinated
“If there’s one constant every flu season, it’s that the single best way to protect against seasonal flu is to get vaccinated," the Centers for Disease Control said. Since flu viruses mutate each season, it’s important to get the new vaccine each and every year.
2. Wash Up
"Washing your hands is the first and best defense to protect yourself from germs,” doctors at the Nebraska Methodist Health System explained. “One study found that regular hand washing can reduce respiratory illness transmission by more than 20 percent. Rinse your hands and lather with soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand rub containing at least 60 percent alcohol.”
3. Stay Fit
Per experts from Emory University, “getting adequate sleep, maintaining balanced nutrition, managing stress and exercising regularly will support your immune system to protect you from illness, and [if you do come down with the cold or flu] assist in a faster recovery.”
4. Hydrate Well
“Increasing your fluid intake during the colder months prevents a dry nose and throat, loosens mucus, and helps your body circulate blood better to fight viruses,” the folks at the University of Nebraska Omaha pointed out. “Aim to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. Stick to clear fluids as much as possible.”
5. Take Stock
According to Scripps Health, it’s best to prepare for the worst — just in case. So, “toss out any expired medications and stock your medicine cabinet with ibuprofen or acetaminophen, decongestants and a general cough and cold medicine.” A thermometer is also good to have on hand, as is “good old-fashioned chicken (or plant-based) soup.”
