Leading with Logic: Ruby Dhalla Brings Business Savvy and Straight Talk to the Political Landscape
Ruby Dhalla’s story is one of breaking barriers, championing diversity, and redefining what it means to lead — whether in the boardroom or on the political stage. As CEO of Dhalla Group, a multi-faceted enterprise with a focus on healthcare, real estate and investments, Dhalla oversees a dynamic organization dedicated to innovation and excellence. Her leadership has transformed Dhalla Group into a powerhouse that not only thrives in business but also uplifts communities through strategic partnerships and community-focused initiatives.
Dhalla’s journey to becoming a prominent figure in Canada is as inspiring as it is complex. Of Indian heritage, she embodies the spirit of perseverance and ambition that is often synonymous with the immigrant experience. Her parents instilled in her a deep sense of purpose and spirituality, encouraging her to dream big. "I've always made everything from the impossible possible, and I have never seen a ceiling as having any roof to it," Dhalla says. "My mom went to university at a time when girls were not encouraged to go to school. My brother, who passed away, lived by the ethos of 'The Secret': Ask for it, believe it, and receive it."
Her cultural heritage has played a significant role in shaping her worldview. Dhalla often speaks about the lessons learned from her family's journey, the values of hard work, and the resilience that has become her hallmark. "I think that prayer gives me strength," she adds, highlighting how spirituality has been a guiding force in her life.
FROM BOARDROOM TO THE BALLOT BOX
Stepping into the political arena, Dhalla made waves as a candidate with an unapologetically bold approach. She was unafraid to challenge the status quo and speak her mind. Her disqualification from the race for Prime Minister only added to her mystique. “Out of all the candidates I was the only true outsider who has not been in the political bubble for the last 10 years. In my campaign we were building momentum as I came forward with progressive policy ideas that were the need hour and challenged the status quo and the establishment. People wanted change but the party did not want me on the debate stage, and on the ballot. Hence, I was disqualified." Dhalla shared candidly. "The establishment did not realize that over 5.8 million people engaged in Twitter — angry at this attack on democracy. People did not want a coronation. They did not want a leadership race that was a sham. They wanted choice, a real debate and a real election.”
While her departure from the race may have been a setback, Dhalla remains an influential voice in Canadian politics. She continues to advocate for leadership that is not only credible but also fearless. "People are looking for credible, strong, and fearless leadership," she said. "You need to have the strength to not only represent your people but to ensure that you are a force to be reckoned with on the world stage. We can’t allow our country or our economy to be held hostage by any foreign leader."
DON’T BE THE ONLY SMART PERSON IN THE ROOM
Her business philosophy is equally robust. As CEO of Dhalla Group, she prioritizes results and surrounds herself with smart, capable professionals who challenge her. "In business, I do not reward failure. I do not surround myself with a bunch of yes people. I actually surround myself with intelligent, capable people who are going to push me and provoke thought to ensure that we have results," she explained. Her pragmatic approach to leadership, focusing on productivity and accountability, mirrors the strategies she believes are needed in governance.
Dhalla is also an advocate for diversity and inclusion, pushing for greater representation of women and minorities in business and politics. She believes in creating real opportunities and ensuring that all voices are heard and valued. "It's not just about ticking boxes; it's about creating real opportunities and ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table," she emphasized.
SHINING LIGHT ON THE DARK
One of Dhalla’s most impactful initiatives has been her work against “fraud marriages” — a distressing practice where men from abroad marry young women in India under false pretenses, only to abandon them once they secure dowries. This issue left many women in limbo, leading to emotional, financial, and societal hardships. Dhalla's advocacy brought attention to this issue in both Canadian Parliament and in India, driving policy discussions and creating change to protect vulnerable young women. It was through this advocacy she became involved with a unique orphanage in India, an experience she describes as “the most beautiful experience ever.” The orphanage provides a safe haven for abandoned baby girls — many of whom are left anonymously in a basket at the orphanage’s entrance. The orphanage not only offers these girls shelter but also love, education, and hope for a better future. “You’ll never know when someone will drop off a baby girl," Dhalla shares. "Sometimes it's a newborn, other times it’s an older girl whose home no longer wants her.”
Dhalla's involvement with the orphanage goes beyond funding — she’s hands-on, spending time with the girls and facilitating adoptions for families around the world.
“When I was in India last year, a couple from California adopted two of our girls,” she recalls. 'It’s incredibly rewarding to see these children find loving homes and to witness the joy they bring to their new families.'
Her story is a testament to the power of heritage, hard work and an unyielding belief in oneself. As Canada looks to the future, voices like Dhalla’s offer a compelling vision of leadership grounded in integrity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to progress. Her journey is far from over, and the next chapter promises to be as bold and impactful as the last.
