Sarah Michelle Gellar Says She's Now Open to a 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Reboot: 'There Are Ways to Do It'
Sarah Michelle Gellar is changing her tune about a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the Cruel Intentions star, 47, admitted she's open to playing the iconic role again after previously saying she wanted to leave the beloved series in the past.
"I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect," she explained of the 1997 supernatural series. "But watching [And Just Like That…] and seeing [Dexter: Original Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’"
"It could be anything,” Gellar noted of a potential return to the show. “It’s a universe. It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”
When the Scooby-Doo alum was asked about a revamp of the series in a 2022 interview, she said, "I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up."
While Gellar didn't seem enthusiastic about starring in a reboot, she was positive about another actress assuming her role. "I am all for them continuing the story, because there’s the story of female empowerment,” she said “I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent."
The blonde beauty learned how to stand up for herself during her seven seasons on the show. "There was a time when I had a reputation of being … difficult," she noted in a 2023 interview. "Anyone that knows me knows it came from the fact that I always put in 100 percent. I never understood people who don’t."
It was important for Gellar to develop thick skin as she once called the Buffy set "toxic." "I will always be proud of what my castmates did, what I did,” she explained. “Was it an ideal working situation? Absolutely not. But it’s OK to love Buffy for what we created because I think it’s pretty spectacular.”
