Shay Mitchell Feels 'Zero Pressure' to Marry Partner Matte Babel: 'I'm Not Living It for Anybody Other Than Myself'
Shay Mitchell is living life on her own terms.
The Pretty Little Liars star, 37, began dating her partner, Matte Babel, in 2017 and has since welcomed daughters Atlas and Rome with him. However, she's not feeling the need to walk down the aisle any time soon.
"No, my family’s so awesome about it," she said in a recent interview when asked if her relatives pressure her to get married. "My mom never bothered me about getting in a relationship, having kids, nothing. She was just like, 'Succeed for yourself. Do what you want to accomplish.'"
"I got with my partner, fortunately, when the timing was right and I had kids when I felt the timing was right," Mitchell continued. "That’s just how I live my life. I feel zero pressure from anybody to get married. I mean, I have two kids with this person — that’s more of a commitment than anything."
With the freedom the brunette beauty's loved ones have given her, she also hopes to bestow the same onto her children when they grow up. "I would never put pressure on my kids to get married," she made clear.
"Why? Like, live your life. Do what you want without the pressure of society norms, because who cares? I’m not living it for anybody other than myself….putting pressure on your kids is so off-putting to me. [For us,] we know what we have, and I don’t need to prove it to anybody else," Mitchell added.
When asked if her kiddos ever ask about the two tying the knot, the You alum said, "Yeah, Atlas has asked, because she sees it in Disney movies. Like, 'Are you guys married?' And [I’m like,] 'We’re committed,' and I just continue to repeat that. We’re a family, first and foremost."
This isn't the first time Mitchell has played by her own rules. As Morning Honey previously reported, she hasn't allowed online criticism to affect the way she parents.
"Life is too short to be worried about what this person and that person is saying. I don't pay attention to the mom-shaming, I don't have time for it," she said in a 2021 interview. "I just have to do what feels right for me, as I think any parents should, and focus on that. You're doing the best job that you can do, and that should be your main focus. I give all of my time and energy to Atlas and things that are important in my life. Focusing on the negative comments that people say on social media is definitely not one of my priorities."
