Tyla Feels Her Back Injury Gave Her a Moment to 'Pay Attention' and 'Slow Down' Amid Meteoric Rise to Fame
Tyla is getting back to her booming career after dealing with a huge health hurdle.
The Grammy winner, 22, sadly had to cancel her 2024 tour in March after sustaining a serious back injury, but she didn't allow the disappointment to put her in a negative headspace.
"It's a moment to just pay attention to myself and slow down," Tyla explained of the sudden end of her live shows. "I feel like it's also something that happened because maybe God wants me to slow down, just breathe and take care of myself."
Despite finding the silver lining, Tyla admitted recovery can be a "frustrating" journey when thinking about all of the complicated choreography and intense movement she'll be doing when performs again. "Your back is such an important part of your body, so I just want to take my time," the superstar noted. "I'm looking forward to just getting better and getting stronger."
After months of recuperation, the "Jump" singer slowly returned to the stage for a few festival performances over the summer. "It felt so good. It's been hard not being able to do all that," she added of the experience. "The little that I'm able to do now, I'm just doing wholeheartedly until I get 100 percent better."
Tyla shot to fame in 2019 after the release of her debut single, "Getting Late," and has become a music industry staple ever since. "I feel like some people don't realize how I'm still very new to all of this," she said. "I'm really enjoying having fun on stage and figuring out what I like, what I want to do, what I don't want to do. When it comes to my tour, I know it's just going to be amazing. I look forward to that time."
In the meantime, Tyla has been attending lavish events, including the 2024 MTV VMAs, where she picked up the award for Best Afrobeats. "This is all so much fun. It's like a dream," the South Africa native gushed over her latest achievement. "I feel like I'm in a movie."
When she's not performing for packed audiences, Tyla has been in the studio cooking up new tracks. "It's different," she said of her upcoming body of work. "I've grown so much this year. I've evolved in so many different aspects that this new music is going to be that version of me, the now version of Tyla."
