Break Out The Eggos! Chowing Down On A Plate Of Waffles Before A Big Run Can Improve Your Performance
To some, carbs are the enemy, but a recent report suggests that runners can actually enhance their performance by chowing down on waffles before pounding the pavement.
Though athletes are known for consuming a ton of carbs before a big event, it's most important to eat both simple and complex carbohydrates, which are found in waffles.
When consumed, the body uses the sugar "as a conversion tool, instead of a comfort food," states Inside Hook.
The notion has been around for decades: in 2001, Honey Stinger snacks was released, a treat that helps turns honey into fuel. The product is technically a stroopwafel, meaning instead of the fluffy waffles you're used to eating at brunch, it's two crispy, dried out waffles with a thin layer of filling in between.
Aside from being tasty, these types of snacks, referred to as "energy waffles," are the perfect pick for runners since they have the winning combo of both simple and complex carbohydrates.
"Simple carbs (one or two sugar molecules linked together) offer quick energy and are often found in processed or refined foods," Inside Hook says. "Complex carbs (three or more sugar molecules linked together) take longer to break down, but offer more sustained energy. They're found in whole grains."
The publication points out that years ago, runners would eat slices of Wonder Bread before an event since they contained less fiber and more refined sugars than wheat version. While that doesn't do any favors for the average person, it's a good choice for those who are about to exert energy for a longer period of time.
There are tons of brands to choose from when it comes to energy waffles, including vegan and gluten-free options, but you should also feel free to indulge in the classic freezer staple Eggos — as long as you keep the syrup to a reasonable limit.
Running Warehouse offers a few different brands of energy waffles. The page claims that the products are "whole foods that provide slow-burning energy for your longer running efforts," noting, "they take longer to digest."
It's also stated that the snacks can be consumed before or during activity.
